Study Class

Dear Students

I hope you are all studying productively in preparation for your Biology Examination on Wednesday in the student centre starting at 12.00 noon.

There will be two papers, Plant and Animal Interactions and Responses and the Patterns of Evolution and Speciation.

On Sunday starting at 2.00pm Mrs Rippon will be holding a study class in room B8. These classes are always a productive way to prepare for the examinations and students from any Biology class are welcome to attend.

Scholarship Study Class Timetable

Here is a proposed timetable for 13 Biology Scholarship classes for term three 2013. The study class will be in room B12 and start at 3.30. Students from all Biology classes are welcome to attend.

Science (ICAS) Competition 2013

ICAS in Science is a is a skills based  Science Literacy assessment that is completed by over a million students from over 6,300 schools in Australia and New Zealand annually.  Why should you enter?

• Fun and challenging competition
• Great for CV
• Gives you an indication of skill on a national level
• HVHS students have traditionally preformed very well. 
• All students can participate - Y9 to Y13

Students sit the assessment on the 5th June, however if you want to enter you need to hand in permission slip with $8.50 to the resource centre by Friday 3rd May

Biology Wednesday

Biology Monday was such a success, lets try for Biology Wednesday. 1pm (for the late risers) in room B12 Wednesday 11 July. There could be some food provided too.

Scholarship classes at VUW

During the holidays there are scholarship workshops being held at Victoria University. These are organised by VUW Student Recruitment.

This year chemistry and physics workshops are at the Kelburn campus. They will take a similar form to previous years with information about approaching the scholarship papers and lots of practice opportunities in different areas of the disciplines.

Answering biology assessment questions

Answering Level two and three NCEA Biology Questions

Biology assessment is very language dependent. Paragraphs and short essays tend to be the required response in our external assessments.
The following steps could be useful in putting together a decent answer:

1. Read the Question
2. Define any key words (scientific terms)
3. Take a moment to sketch a quick concept map (related facts and processes) or T chart (comparison, similarities and differences)
4. Write an answer explaining at least four ideas or terms from you concept map or T chart using any examples given in the question.
5. Read the question once more. if you are happy with your answer move on.
